Blender Free Open Source 3D Modelling and 3D Animation Software: Overview and History

Blender is a free, open source 3D modeling and 3D animation suite that also incorporates a built-in game engine. Despite being not much widely known or supported as Maya and 3D Studio Max, it has been in active development for years and has a large and enthusiastic followers. Besides, it has been used to create several short animation films that rival the production values of big budget Hollywood movies. Most importantly, some of the artwork created by its users is simply stunning.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6MlUcmOul8

History of Blender

NeoGeo, a Netherlands-based animation studio introduced Blender in 1995 as a part of their in-house production tool. Later in 1998, Ton Roosendaal founded a new company called “Not a Number” (Nan) to further develop and promote this product. Unfortunately, NaN was shut down in 2002 due to the owning poor economic conditions. However, Ton knew that Blender was too valuable to let go, so he started non-profit Blender Foundation, and released Blender to the public under the GNU General Public License on Oct 13, 2002.

The Blender Foundation released its first open source animated movie in 2005, “Elephants Dream”. The movie was a big success, which led to the opening of “Blender Institute”. The institute released another open source based movie in 2008 named “Big Buck Bunny”, and in September 2008, the open game “YouFrankie!”Later, the Blender Institute released another smash hits such as “Sintel” and “Tears of Steel”.

Off-The-Shelve 3D Animation Software

Computer animation can be in form of either 2D or 3D. Two-dimensional animation or simply 2D animation is somewhat traditional form of art. It makes use of drawing created on paper, celluloid transparent sheet, or recently digitally, and works in a two-dimensional environment. In case of any problem is found in the drawings, it is corrected by hand drawing techniques. Probably this is the reason why it is sometimes referred as hand-drawn animation.

3D animation or three-dimensional animation is the modern form of animation that entirely relies on computer technologies. All the objects and characters are created on computer and are manipulated using various software applications. In order to create 3D objects and 3D animation, various 3D software packages and computers are essential. Although, most 3D animation studios today are using custom software, there are still many commercial off-the-shelve software available in the market, through which animators can create amazing 3D animations. Let us briefly look at some of the commercial off-the-shelve 3D animation software that are largely used by some 3D animation studios.

For instance, video game designers use 3D character design applications to create 3D characters of the game they are designing; Architects use these programs to design 3D models of the buildings they are going to build; and so on. It is because of the heap of users, there are a lot of software applications available in the market today. Although, some of the most widely used software packages are as follows:

3D Technology – Pros & Cons

3d technologyThe technology of 3-dimensional (3D) image is now quickly becoming a rising trend in the world of televisions and monitors alike. 3D technology is offering something that is completely new that people have never experienced before. However, keep in mind that 3D is not an upgrade from any previous TV or monitor technologies like plasma TV, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), and LED (Light Emitting Diode), but it is something different. A 3D technology is a breakthrough technology and this is what makes it so interesting to people out there. If you are one of those people who are fascinated with the 3D technology and are interested in buying a 3D TV or monitor, you will have to take into consideration the pros and cons of the technology.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of 3D

Indeed, the main advantage of a 3D technology is that you will be able to feel as if the objects you see on the screen come out of the screen heading your way, offering you a sensational entertainment experience. Nevertheless, besides the advantage, you will have to be aware of the disadvantage that you will be requiring 3D glasses to perceive that sensational entertainment experience. Regrettably, some of the 3D glasses are sold in the market with a very high price tag.

The next thing that you will have to take into consideration when thinking about buying a 3D TV or monitor is that there are only few 3D contents (movies and games) available in the market that support the 3D technology. Besides, you will have to keep in mind that many people who try to watch 3D contents often experience symptoms like dizziness, eyestrain, and nausea.

When considering buying 3D TV or monitor, you must also know that some offer full HD resolution while others cannot. 3D technology is still germinal, but it won’t take long to fully establish. 3D is the future of entertainment, which will entirely change the viewing experience of people worldwide. Now, it is entirely up to you whether to consider buying 3D TV / monitor or not.
